This study investigates the midwife’s role in perinatal bereavement and in counselling parents through different stages of grief. Based on a French experience, an evaluative process was initiated at the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University Hospitals of Geneva, Switzerland. This process resulted in the development of an information brochure for grieving parents, and of working definitions of nursing interventions to facilitate the grieving process. It also led to a team effort to facilitate social rituals in support of grieving parents.
