The Importance of Scent to Patients and Healthcare Staff

Scents condition life from its beginning and accompany it to its end. For several years, a hospital palliative care unit has integrated an aromatherapy consultation to the care of patients suffering from olfactory problems, lack of appetite, or anxiety. Following multidisciplinary evaluation, patients themselves and their families choose fragrances from approximately twenty compositions that they personalize as they wish. The chosen scents, even when light, successfully alleviated most patients’ symptoms. The diversity of fragrances was much appreciated as it avoided monotony and created an agreeable setting for patients, health care providers, and visiting friends and family. Furthermore, personalization of the mixtures fostered exchanges between patients and health care providers, despite the imminence of death.
