There is something self-evident about linking the work of Pierre Schoendoerffer to honor. Honor is a theme that runs through his all his cinematographic and literary works, from The 317th Platoon (the novel was published in 1963 and the film was released in 1965) to Above the Clouds (his latest film, released in 2004 and adapted from the 1981 novel of the same name). “Schendoerfferian” heroes are indeed confronted recurrently with the issue of their loyalty to moral principles, essential in maintaining their self-esteem. As the destinies of these heroes unfold, from the Indochina War to the Algerian War, the outlines of honor and its practical implications in the lives of men become blurred, to the extent that the filmmaker and author does not manage to reply fully to the questions raised without using references of a spiritual nature.
