This article describes the creation and development of the First Hospice of Samara. Founded on the Christian values that were at the origin of the modern “hospice movement,” it works on the basis of WHO’s definition of palliative care. Obstacles to the development of palliative care in the Russian Federation include 1) health care policy and financing; 2) doctor-patient communication; 3) availability of opiates and other essential drugs. We describe a long-term partnership between Russian, Swiss, and British professionals. The current needs of the Hospice, for which the help of foreign structures would be welcome, are underlined.
