Colonel Jacques Allaire’s experience in Indochina is enough to make us understand the extent to which service personnel involved in a foreign theatre can fully grasp all the facets of alienation. They are almost always alienated from the country that has become the theatre of operations and its population but in certain extreme situations like those experienced by Jacques Allaire they can also become alienated from some of their comrades, their own country, their fellow citizens and even themselves.
