When he made The Anderson platoon in 1966, Pierre Schoendoerffer filmed many different forms of otherness: his own with respect to Vietnam and the Vietnamese but also from the American soldiers that henceforth were fighting on this land, his French perspective on these soldiers who were foreigners to him, etc. All the protagonists are alien to each other and yet they are united by war. This is a classic theme of portrayals of conflict but its originality here comes from both the director’s past and the subtlety of the storytelling techniques used. These characteristics explain why the film has remained in people’s memories, including in the United States.
