Palliative care in cancerology and the place of sexuality

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2018. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Sexuality remains a dimension of life as yet rarely addressed by nursing staff. Cancerology is no exception to this and it really is an issue that is never addressed in palliative care. Sexuality is, nevertheless, part of life; hence our interest in the place it occupies. For this purpose, we conducted semi-structured interviews with twenty-seven cancer patients in palliative care. These interviews focused on the importance of sexuality for the patient. We were interested in their sexuality before they were treated for cancer. Then the interview focused on their current sexuality to see if there was any change. The study was also interested in the needs and complaints the patients could have regarding their private and sexual lives. This inquiry highlighted an interest in sexuality among all the patients in the study even if their intimacy and sexuality had been modified by the illness. It also revealed that the patients suffered from a lack of physical contact during hospital stays. Moreover, the patients are not satisfied with the respect for their intimacy during hospital stays.
