Were the Cent Gardes merely “for show”?

Is there no room for beauty on the battlefield? On March 24, 1854, Napoleon III decreed the creation of the Cent Gardes (Hundred Guards), a cavalry squadron tasked with protecting the emperor and standing guard at his places of residence. This opulently adorned unit fell under criticism for being merely for show – mere palace dwellers that served no true military purpose. Nevertheless, when the war horns called them into battle, the Cent Gardes proved to be valiant soldiers, giving their lives to defend the fatherland.
