Between 1946 and 1954, nearly fourteen thousand gendarmes were sent to serve in Indochina. They carried out a wide variety of tasks: public order, military policing, indigenous unit supervision, river patrol and even parachute missions. Most of them were stationed near the front, where they soon became true “gens d’armes” (literally “people of arms”) and thereby developed a special kind of fraternity.
