Brothers in Islam

The Islamic definition of fraternity encompasses ancient clan relationships. It then goes beyond, promoting a form of solidarity in faith and belonging, drawing upon the Quran and stories surrounding the prophet Mohammed. In the Middle Ages, the religious dimension of fraternity was complemented with legal provisions, particularly regarding almsgiving, contract law and inheritance. In contemporary times, certain movements went on to politicise this fraternal vocabulary, in order to redefine national frameworks and secure access to power.
