The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the diagnosis reached by Sérieux and Capgras concerning the stabilization of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s paranoia during the last years of his life, by studying his last autobiographical text: Reveries of a Solitary Walker. Rather than invoke a senile involution of the disorder, we will examine the relevance of the Freudian conception of delirium in psychosis as an “attempt to heal.” We will try to determine whether, as in the case of Chief Justice Schreber, the effect of feminization theorized by psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan as “push-to-the-woman” was a determining factor in the stabilization.
