Fraternal incest or sibling sexual abuse?

It is not rare, among professionals working with adolescents, to hear certain remarks directed against young people who have imposed their sexuality on others. Signifiers such as “predator,” “pedophile,” and “pervert” may be used, even though it is clinically necessary to take the time to determine what factors compelled the teenager to act, before “labeling” him/her. Based on two clinical cases, this article reflects on the “sexual act” in two of its forms, fraternal incest and sibling sexual abuse. Incest takes place in a fusional, symbiotic relationship between two people, both of whom, at least for a while, find satisfaction in it. Passion is central to it, as is the enjoyment of an exclusive relationship. In sibling abuse, on the other hand, the notions of influence over the other and omnipotence are uppermost in the mind of the perpetrator. One can hardly differentiate the two at the level of material facts and the behavior of those involved; it is only on the plane of the psychic defenses that the nuances are noticeable. We therefore propose to examine the aspects of splitting present in both cases.
