Young psychiatrists: When exclusive private practice is no longer viable
Type de matériel :

Demographic data reveal a decline in the choice of exclusive private practice on the part of psychiatrists. Several things could explain this fact. Young newly qualified psychiatrists belong to so-called “generation Y,” whose professional expectations influence the development of modes of medical practice. The modest gap in average earnings between public and private consultation in psychiatry does little to encourage them into the private sector. In contrast, the increasingly less professional social origin of doctors also tends to reduce the number of private practitioners. There are specific identifiable uncertainties regarding setting out in private practice: fears of isolation, boredom, commitment, alienation at work, fear of administrative burdens, and fears of investment as well as an empty waiting room. As young psychiatrists nowadays are not often attached to public hospitals, there is a new pattern of practice methods that the digital revolution will probably only accelerate.
