Functional health is a new way of approaching physical and mental health. It considers a combination of the personal, social, and environmental factors in service users’ lives. To support the service user in his or her treatment plan, many new therapeutic approaches have been developed, especially in the field of psychosocial rehabilitation, which has begun to be adopted by some psychiatric units and medical-social services and facilities. However, the tools used in psychosocial rehabilitation should also be applied to the user through the lens of functional health. To do so, a collaboration between health care, social, and medical-social services and facilities is needed, as each of these play a crucial role in service users’ general treatment and rehabilitation pathways. Moving toward recovery requires collaborative action between different services and facilities that targets many areas of the service users’ life, including, for example, help finding a job, or support with housing issues. At the same time, the central focus for any treatment plan should be the service users’ personal resources and capacities, as well as their individual experiences and wishes.
