Psychiatry is undoubtedly the medical specialty most closely linked to the societal context. Indeed, current events keep reminding us of the impact of political orientations and the interpellations of the media or public opinion on our practices. In the context of involuntary care, the stance of certifying physician seems to place the psychiatrist in a dichotomy between his or her mission of care and a role of prevention of disturbances to public order and to the safety of individuals. We offer a historical analysis of the content of the medical certificates of placement written at the Henri-Colin service between 1910 and 1950. Various aspects and problems related to nosography and the conception of care are highlighted, as well as the societal elements influencing professional practice. À comparison with current practices concludes our remarks.
