Some children and adolescents faced with the illness or disability of a member of their family or household will provide significant and regular support, and are known as “young carers.” In France, 14.3 percent of high school students and 15.9 percent of university students are in this situation. Given their numbers and the potential consequences of their situation, identifying and supporting these young people is crucial, and yet few dedicated schemes currently exist in France. In Ariège, an innovative scheme for young carers aged eleven to twenty-five was launched in 2020 at the Maison Départementale des Adolescents (MDA) (Departmental Center for Adolescents). The aim of this article is to illustrate, through three clinical vignettes, the situations of young carers encountered at the MDA. These studies highlight the heterogeneous nature of the problems and needs of young carers, as well as the need to adapt support to each individual situation through the proposals and actions put in place to support them.
