Releases from prison continue to raise concerns for various reasons, ranging from public and professional apprehension regarding the risk of reoffending in society or successful social reintegration, to the dissatisfaction among healthcare providers assisting detainees due to lapses in care, frequent challenges in coordinating care transitions, and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders within detention facilities. In 2018, the French government responded to these concerns by prioritizing support for individuals leaving prison through the development of new penitentiary structures known as “structures d’accompagnement vers la sortie (SAS)” or “exit support structures.” These SAS facilities are designated to accommodate a limited number of prisoners set for release, chosen based on various criteria established by the prison administration. Healthcare units within prisons were tasked with proposing care system projects tailored to these specific environments. This article aims to elucidate the context and health-related issues surrounding prisoner releases, to introduce the SAS facilities, and to provide a detailed overview of the healthcare unit’s activities within the Bordeaux-Gradignan SAS facility.
