Trauma in adolescence

In adolescence, the intensification of both sexual and aggressive drives, together with accompanied pubertal changes, provide an opportunity for the consolidation of traumatic experiences. We can identify two kinds of trauma: external trauma linked to threats coming from external objects or circumstances, and internal trauma linked to the pressure of the drives that are felt as an uncontrollable threat to the integration of the ego. The author demonstrates how these two sources of trauma and anxiety can be entangled in a complex organization in which the external traumatic event can be used to conceal the internal trauma linked to the pressure of libidinal and aggressive drive. Conversely, the denial of this pressure can also be used to conceal traumatic external events that occurred in childhood. The two types of entanglement between external and internal trauma are illustrated by clinical examples.
