Incest between twins, grief, and creative melancholy

Based on my research on transidentity and in dialogue with the incest of “two sisters and their mother” of the French anthropologist, Françoise Héritier, I propose the concept of “incest between twins,” which can apply independently of sex and kinship as long as it involves a real or imagined “twinship.” Transidentity represents a “rebirth” on the fantasy level of a close relation, absent or deceased, with whom the individual shared a twin-like relationship, recreating this primitive and incestual fusion in a melancholic way, as did Pierre Molinier. Writing can also be a way to “resuscitate” the lost twin instead of embodying them in oneself, as the French novelist Annie Ernaux did with her sister whom she never knew.
