From the transcultural to the intracultural

In this work, we raise the issue of the specificities of the clinical stance to adopt when patients give accounts of experiences and practices in the field of the paranormal and alternative practices. A comparison of two clinical situations highlights differences in clinicians’ attitudes towards these narratives depending on whether the protagonists are in an intracultural or transcultural configuration. Faced with narratives that question the representation of the world on the part of the patient or the clinician, for instance when medium consultations or practices of shamanism are mentioned, it is necessary to adopt a complementarist approach and a process of de-centering, even in the presence of a common cultural space with the patient. This also requires the characterization of the specificities of the clinical accompaniment in this “intracultural-transcultural” setting in terms of the transference dynamic.
