From the Olympica to the Première Méditation: Oneiric experience and delirium in Descartes

In this article we propose the study of the first of Descartes’s Méditations Métaphysiques not according to the “order of reasons” but from the point of view of its clinical verisimilitude, as the narrative of a typical experience of disorganization typically linked to the blossoming of delusional psychosis: from a feeling of strangeness that endangers the naive belief in reality to a delusion of influence that leads to the hypothesis of the “malicious demon.” From this perspective, the argument of madness is quite limited. We suggest that this narrative can be compared to the unique and traumatic experience of November 1619, put to paper, according to A. Baillet, in the Olympica.
