This article is based on an empirical example analyzing a professional situation in which social workers are confronted with doubts about what might happen. While working to build relationships of trust, they maintain a calm posture in a temporality in the making. Our aim is to understand what goes on in interactions, what constitutes them, and how these seasoned professionals develop their ability to work with the unexpected. To do this, we’ll draw on extracts from cross and self-confrontations that reveal mirrored knowledge of action, such as the magnanimity of a presence in the face of uncertainty, or the fear that prevails in certain situations with regard to a calm posture, despite the imponderable share of risk involved in intervention.
