This text is based on observations and verbatims collected during ethnographic research into the sustainability of the nursing profession, based on the experiences of trainee nurses. It tells the story of how students and carers are subjected to and question the logics that give priority to the commercialisation of care over solidarity, the social and the human. It also develops how solidarity, although increasingly undermined by the transformations affecting the worlds of work and education, lies at the heart of the socio-political avenues suggested by the participants we met for thinking about quality care, fulfilling working and training conditions, and a society that emphasises care and transmission.
