Applying a critical sociolinguistic approach, this article examines the entrance of Franco-Canadian identity in the field of heritage tourism and its connection with dominant and emerging linguistic ideologies in Acadia, Ontario and Alberta. We wish to understand how linguistic authenticity is mobilized for identity purposes to reproduce, celebrate and purchase the self, without totally escaping the tensions arising from turning identity into a commodity, thus necessarily essentializing group boundaries and linguistic practices confronted by the logics of the global market.
