Some thoughts on language and space as experienced through migration The various spaces that contemporary migrations and ever-increasing mobility bring into play (traveling to-and-fro, nomad existences, diasporas) are associated with both expected and novel language practices. To study the relationship between space and language, we will elaborate on the notion of « lived spaces », which emerges from verbalizing the places that are significant, i.e. one's « country of origin » and where one has traveled. The excerpts under scrutiny are taken from interviews done in France (« here »); they concern traveling, living and making plans « over there », and are presented in a contrastive manner, so as to highlight both their resemblances and differences. Our analysis and interpretations are interactive (socio-pragmatic) and inspired by the notion of dialogism.
