Émile Benveniste’s Working Notes: the Emergence of Theoretical Thinking via its Enunciation

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2009. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Émile benveniste's working notes: the emergence of theoretical thought from enunciation Emile Benveniste's archives and rough drafts make it possible to throw light on his working habits : notebooks for observations and investigations, reading notes, working notes, drafts, more or less corrected texts, typescripts. This rich resource highlights the important role of the earliest working notes in the writing of an article and shows how the initial formulation of these notes develops during the process of textualization. To contextualize this specific role of Benveniste's notes, the paper first gives an overview of the linguist's working habitus, followed by a structured corpus of examples taken from various files of genetic material related to the preparation of articles in Problems in General Linguistics. Using the transcription of his handwritten notes, and sometimes pictures, an analysis of the writing process is used to show how they are transformed.
