In the 1970s, Jacky Simonin was part of a research team at the University of Villetaneuse–Paris 13 that very early on was interested by John J. Gumperz’s works, and more generally in the North-American sociology of social interactions and sociolinguistics. Jacky Simonin analyzes here how in his own research he received and applied John J. Gumperz’s notions of interpretative interactional sociolinguistics. The interview is carried out by Josiane Boutet who, though she belonged to the same generation of post-1968 academics, did not follow the same intellectual path. We thus witness a dialogue between two sociolinguists with two different itineraries in the same field.
