Le Panier, a Marseille Neighborhood Undergoing Gentrification: Social Reconfigurations and Linguistic Resistance
Type de matériel :
72
Using the case of Le Panier, this article looks at the process of gentrification accompanying the restructuring policies of the historical center of Marseille. After thirty years of government involvement, we note that the process of gentrification in this neighborhood remains incomplete, despite a significant program of property reclassification and an obvious change in the socio-demographic composition of the area. By examining a series of illegal pieces of graffiti and posters found in the area, along with several interviews with people living in the neighborhood, we aim to understand the way in which the original inhabitants of Le Panier experience the conflicts of appropriation of space that arise with regard to the newcomers, and more particularly, the way in which the posters and pieces of graffiti create power balances and linguistic forms of resistance that tend to slow down the transformations in progress.
