Couples where different languages are used have been described either as mixed, which underlines the socially stressed difference of the couple, or as multilingual, which emphasizes the complexity of the couple’s language repertoire. In order to explore the influence of the modes of socialization of the couple on the L2 acquisition of the alloglott partner, I suggest adopting the lens of exolingualism, which describes an asymmetry linked to power issues as shown by the category mixed and to the complexity of the linguistic repertoire depicted by the category multilingual. Relying on interviews collected with two couples living in the French part of Switzerland, my aim is to discuss what kind of knowledge and conceptions these categorizations produce about the couple, the language, and the L2 acquisition.
