Image management and repair: Emmanuel Macron during the program “L’Émission politique”

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2018. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article seeks to trace Emmanuel Macron’s image repair process during the 2017 French presidential campaign as seen on the program Émission politique. The analysis focuses on two recurring attacks: first, the claim that the candidate of change would in fact be the successor to the outgoing socialist president François Hollande; and second, the contradiction that he would have contested relations with the world of finance even as he sought to represent this elite. Based on an approach that, in addition to Benoit’s model, is inspired by face management theory and rhetorical argumentation, we will explore the modalities for electoral image repair in an interactive format. We examine the way in which image repair, understood as an attempt to defend and restore a public image subject to attacks, is managed by the future president in face-to-face interaction performed for a third party. We will study three interactions that take place with different interlocutors: the journalists hosting the program, an activist, and a political opponent.
