Nontraditional gender identity terms have proliferated in recent years. The anglicism queer is found in French but is competing with expressions like LGBT, allosexuel, altersexuel, trans, and bispirituel. The groups concerned are trying to acquire symbolic capital by proposing names that are inclusive of more gender identities and sexual orientations. The present study is a lexicological analysis of these neologisms and factors that may favor or, on the contrary, curtail their circulation in the general press in Quebec. Have the groups that we call by these names expressed preferences or commented about them? Do we feel a normative concern for certain names such as the anglicism queer? Is integration into the lexical system of French a necessary condition for the circulation of terms? This article attempts to identify which of these factors carries more weight than others.
