In this paper, we analyze four different types of linguistic exchange relating to tourism. In so doing, we demonstrate that borrowing, appropriating, and reevaluating language(s) is a central characteristic of interactions between hosts and tourists. Together, these linguistic exchanges highlight the sociolinguistic basis of tourism’s ephemeral or transitory relationships. Through these moments of contact, hosts and tourists negotiate the nature of their experience, the meanings of culture and place, as well as their own relationships and identities. It is also here that many meanings of globalization are promulgated and take shape.
