This paper explores the use of the third-person noun or pronoun in the presidential debates between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in 2016. Our study shows how the seemingly harmless grammar of everyday communication—such as using “she” or “he” as pronouns of address, and “Hillary Clinton,” “Donald Trump,” “Hillary,” “Donald,” “Clinton,” or “Trump” as nouns of address—are weaponized to disempower the enemy on the political battlefield.
