How can canon law help clarify the question of confirmation?

Canon law can shed an interesting light on the debate concerning the age at which the sacrament of confirmation ought to be received. By offering bishops’ conferences the option of setting an age above that of the age of discretion for conferring the sacrament, the Code applies the principle of subsidiarity and invites us to affirm the value of a diversity of approaches, in attentiveness to the existing practice of Christian communities. However, a reminder of the norm – “the sacrament of confirmation is to be conferred at about the age of discretion” – also invites us to consider the need for consistency throughout pastoral practice regarding this sacrament.
