How are we to make Jesus Christ not only the object of preaching but also its subject? This question forms the essence of this reflection. Making Jesus Christ the subject of preaching is thus to move from a metaphorical discourse about him to a communication intended to enable the gathering to receive his living presence, capable of transforming our faith and our life. The article pursues this objective by drawing the tools available in the Christian tradition for understanding the literary genre and the linguistic structure of preaching. It is a form of speech intended to make ever more relevant the original aim of the Eucharistic celebration. The person of Jesus will thereby be transformed from a shadowy captive of our memory into a living subject capable of uniting the assembled people into one body that is nourished by his word.
