The popular reading of the Bible and its impact on the renewal of catechesis in Latin America

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2018. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article presents the hermeneutical turning point at Medellín, which, starting from the principle of unity between the history of salvation and human history, inaugurated a new way of reading the Bible starting with the experience of the poor and thereby of a new way of doing catechesis. These two major developments influenced both the pedagogy and the content of catechesis: life raises vital questions that will find answers in the sacred text, in biblical stories that illuminate life through hope and provide criteria for action taken in the name of faith. This popular method of reading the Bible soon came to represent an epistemological faith journey with major consequences for catechesis, in particular given the role assigned to the Scriptures in the catechetical encounter. It is not that the Bible became a new handbook or that catechetical sessions were turned into Bible classes, but rather that identification between catechesis and Bible reading was such that both catechists and catechized saw their lives reflected in every story, every narrative in the Scriptures.
