“Catechumenal” discernment and pastoral conversion

Discernment has an important place in the Christian initiation of adults, as we can see from reading the pastoral notes accompanying the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This “catechumenal” discernment is relevant not only to those directly involved in accompanying catechumens, but the entire local community, something that is not stressed frequently enough. Moreover, it is possible that this discernment stands to gain today from being “freed up”, in particular along the lines of Amoris laetitia and expanded in the way local communities themselves foster the conversion of catechumens and incorporate them into their midst. Such a practice of “catechumenal” discernment could also enhance the pastoral conversion of communities themselves.
