Synodality and Participation – Possible Realities or Real Possibilities of the Church?

Synodality and participation are not simply present and given, they have to be exercised. This affects all institutions and therefore also the Church. However, synodal and participatory learning processes also mean that the Church can no longer be fearful of changes that only concentrate synodality and participation on a select group of people or that only produce external modifications. On the other hand, if synodality and participation become the inner “style” of the ‘Church’s self-understanding and of those bearing responsibility in the Church, it would be possible to transform the Church in a credible and authentic “sign” of the Gospel of the “Deus humanissimus” (Edward Schillebeeckx).
