The societal environment in which today’s young individuals are growing up has undergone a significant transformation. We are indeed currently experiencing a significant shift, characterized by the digital revolution. This revolution is not only a technological one but a cultural one as well, since it is changing how we relate to time by ushering in the “everything, right now” era, to location by eradicating barriers, and to others with the horizontality facilitated by social media. This evolution has an important impact on how younger generations behave, which can be characterized by the preponderance of the emotional over the institutional, the peer-to-peer culture over the intergenerational, and the importance of the moment over time in the long term.In light of such events, the biggest challenge we are currently facing, is educating people about fraternity. This entails acknowledging that diversity may be a source of enrichment, cultivating empathy for the most vulnerable, and mastering conflict management in an era of social media and increasing violence. Respectful instruction is the key to success.
