Central bank digital currency: Definition and progress

Alongside the development of crypto-assets, central banks have begun to reflect on the creation of a national digital currency (CBDC). Such a currency is the equivalent of banknotes in dematerialized form. Such an innovation would provide an additional, easier-to-use payment solution, contributing to accessibility and inclusion. In other words, digital currencies are expected to have significant implications for banking disintermediation. Many fintechs are able to be created in order to take advantage of the creation of this new ecosystem in order to provide consumers with fast and secure electronic payment methods (because they are guaranteed by a central bank). This article provides an overview of these different digital currencies being created. It draws in particular on the example of the Nordic and Chinese central banks.
