Aware of the geopolitical dangers related to the Middle-East conflict, the representatives of French diplomacy pursued during this period a policy of balance (and not of neutrality) between the parties. Anxious to reach a political solution in the sense conveyed by the formulation “territories for peace”, they were able to engage in a fruitful dialogue with the Arab representatives. The Arabs were all the more willing to do so as they were in an unfavourable power struggle and a dialogue of the deaf with the Israelis, worsened by the violent terms used by both the parties.
