German illustrated press: emergence, evolution and research perspectives (1880-1945)

The introductory article shows the logics at work in the emergence of mainstream illustrated press from the end of the XIXth century onwards, between patterns’ internationalization and image’s increased part. Although having been the object of numerous works, German productions from the first half of the XXth century keep on offering a flourishing field of study, reinvested with new approaches since enriched notably with the recent expansion of the Visual Studies and the “Digital Humanities”. The contributions collected in this issue, covering the period ranging from the Treaty of Versailles (1920) to the end of WW2 (1945), are an illustration thereof.
