Articulation between Banking and Microfinance: A New Area for Intermediation?

This paper aims to analyze the role of an approach favoring articulation between banks and microfinance institutions in the creation of a new type of financial intermediation and the promotion of investment projects in the African context. However, the inadequacy of long-term resources in addition to the lack of an insolvency risk insurance mechanism place limits on their intermediation capacities. Although banks have sufficient resources, management skills, and access to technology, for reasons of cost and lack of understanding of the microfinance market, their entry has been sluggish. This study considers two approaches to articulation approaches: a partnership approach, and an institutional intermediation approach.
