Poverty and Inequalities of Human Rights in Africa: A Gendered Perspective
Type de matériel :
28
Based on a review of the legal standards that control relations between the sexes in several African countries, this paper analyzes the processes through which discrimination against women affect their empowerment, their health, and their safety, and compromises development prospects. The evolution of laws does not always guarantee improvement in the situation of women, for example, in terms of access to land. Moreover, the weak legal socialization of women and the practices of "forum shopping" reinforce the coexistence of several unfavorable normative orders. In spite of the slow pace of progress, customary law is weakened by current demographic trends throughout Africa.
