Local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are becoming development promoters in rural areas. This is a recent phenomenon in Brazil. Are NGOs influential actors in the renewal of concepts and practices in the field of development? Two cases of NGOs operating in Santa Catarina State, in the South of Brazil, are analyzed. While in their official discourse, they aim to promote an alternative form of development focused in sustainability and solidarity, the NGOs' interventions are marked by a corporatist concept of development.
