The Incomplete Conversion of the Middle East and North African Countries to the Export-Led Growth Model: What Lessons in a Context of Crisis?

This paper aims to highlight the effects of trade opening on long-term growth dynamics and to draw lessons from the inertia and structural vulnerabilities in the industrialization trajectories in Middle East and North African countries. Industrialization without technological appropriation, which impedes economic diversification, strongly exposes these economies to external shocks. We also discuss the conditions for a transition from the export-led growth model in a context of crisis.
