The aim of this paper is firstly to identify and explain the many terms that describe alternative forms of tourism as sustainable while highlighting ambivalences and contradictions. Secondly, we analyze the potential and limitations of two particular forms of sustainable tourism that are more institutionalized than others, namely ecotourism and community-based tourism, as a result of discrepancies between rhetoric and practice in several countries of the South.
