The impact of social performance on the interest rates of the microfinance industry: Is the MENA region atypical?
Type de matériel :
31
The determinants of the lending rate are estimated using an instrumental variables model on a sample group of sixty-six MFIs in the MENA region from 2004 to 2014. Five hypotheses drawn from observations of the literature on microfinance are tested. The hypotheses regarding internal factors (operating expenses and age) are not corroborated and the social performance has a contrasting impact on the interest rate, whereupon financial performance is often the main determinant. External factors (competition and regulation) corroborate the observations. The MENA region seems rather atypical within microfinance. Classification JEL : C13, C33, D23, G21, I3
