The diversification and informalization of modes of transport in Abidjan since the 1990s have led to an increase in economic, environmental, physical, and social risks for taxi drivers. This article shows that taxi drivers implement strategies that are linked to their working conditions and dependent on occupational hierarchies in order to face these risks. Belonging to certain categories of drivers strongly influences the evolution of their situation and projects, as well as their individual levels of exposure to occupational risks and to social insecurity.
