Microfinance institutions in WAEMU countries: Determinants of the massification of the credit offer for women

While there has been much research into microfinance, little of it has focused on the main determinants of the massification of the supply of credit for women in countries of the WAEMU. In this context, our empirical analysis focuses on microfinance institutions from eight WAEMU member countries over the period 2002–2017. The results of the random effects model for panel data show that the equity and subsidies received by these institutions contribute to increasing the volume of loans intended for women, unlike debt financing, which appears to have no impact. In addition, WAEMU countries would benefit from reviewing their governance systems as these do not seem conducive to increasing the supply of credit for women.
